The Sociology of Education programme covers a wide range of areas. Traditional sociological issues in education and training are of course included in our programme: the relationship between social inequalities and education, the interaction between social processes (demographic, migration, settlement networks) and educational policy decisions, the relationship between the economy and the labour market and vocational training, the emergence of social inequalities in education, and so on. In addition, particular attention will be paid to higher education. In this area, we will focus less on issues of inequality and more on comparative and educational policy analysis, as well as on problems of institutional leadership and management. The latter strand is particularly relevant in the context of the Bologna process, the ongoing transformation of higher education. We will also examine the processes within schools, the impact and effectiveness of curricula, organisation and methods of education and training, and their correlation with the physical and mental characteristics of pupils.
