BA Specialization in English Technical Translation

The English Translation Specialization introduces undergraduate students to the theory and practice of translation, who will apply the knowledge acquired in the disciplinary classes during the lessons of the translation program. The translation program provides a basic knowledge of translation based on the linguistic foundations of translation in practice-oriented classes. The fifty-credit, four-semester program, consisting of two lectures and eight accompanying seminars, is offered from the third semester onwards and admission is based on academic merit. The lectures provide an introduction to translation theory and to English-Hungarian contrastive linguistics relevant to translation. After completing the basic translation seminars and the text and style classes, students will take practical translation courses in the fields of social sciences, law and business, complemented by a seminar on literary translation.

PhD in British, Irish, and American Literatures in English

The Program in British, Irish and American Literatures in English comprises two phases, the first of which consists of three modules: (1) core curriculum courses in the fields of literary theory, cultural studies and literary history stretching over the first three semesters; (2) teaching, tutoring, mentoring and other department-related activities (second and third semesters); individual research for the thesis (continuous) and (3) revision for the complex exam (fourth semester). Having earned the required credits and passed the complex exam, students enter the second phase, wherein they are required to finish their theses with the help of their supervisors, and submit it in two years after their complex exam.

The program is thus divided into two years of course-work and two years of research and writing, with tutors helping candidates all along on their way towards receiving their PhDs. As the faculty have different areas of expertise, we support individual research with a variety of focus in the fields of British, Irish and American literatures in English. In order to find out about what we teach and do research in, please check our webpage at the University of Pécs.
