The primary aim of the Research Centre, which has been operating since 1 March 2011, is to create an institutional framework for research in church history at the University of Pécs. Several lecturers at the University work on church history or on related research. As an organisational framework, the Research Centre would significantly increase the effectiveness of smaller research groups and individual applicants by developing the necessary infrastructure, coordinating and organising research, seeking out funding opportunities, and designing and running projects. The Research Centre was established primarily by university lecturers working on the history of the Catholic Church, joined by invited external members. In the medium term, it could become a leading research centre in Transdanubia and an organiser of church history research, especially if it cooperates with the church history research centres of Hungary's historic churches. The Research Centre considers training the next generation of scholars and integrating them into the profession an important part of its mission. Supporting students in undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate programmes therefore has a prominent place, which is also reflected in its organisational structure.

At the same time, it is very important that researchers from other universities and institutions join the Centre as external associates, since many ongoing and upcoming projects are based on cooperation. In this way, the Research Centre also plays a significant role in inter-institutional cooperation (joint grant applications, book series and conferences).

The Research Centre sees its task as preparing and organising research spanning two millennia, from the founding of the Church to the end of the 20th century. Since an interdisciplinary approach is a basic expectation of modern research, representatives of many disciplines besides history can join the Centre. In the long term, cooperation among researchers in theology, ethnography, archaeology, architecture, art history, geography, political science, literary history, philosophy, aesthetics, education and sociology, among others, can prove fruitful.
