The Latin America Centre was founded on 19 November 2001 with the support of the University of Pécs, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Latin American, Spanish and Portuguese embassies accredited to Hungary. Since 1 January 2004 it has operated as the Ibero-America Centre of the University of Pécs.
Since 2002, the Centre has organised a one- or two-day international academic conference every year. The Centre launched the Iberoamericana Quinqueecclesiensis series of studies and conference proceedings, the 15th volume of which was presented in May 2017. In spring 2017 (9–14 May), the Ibero-America Centre organised its academic and cultural event series presenting the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking world, known as "Ibero-America Week", for the eighteenth time.
In 2005, during the bidding phase for the European Capital of Culture title, the Pécs 2010 Programme Council awarded the academic and cultural programme of Ibero-America Week a prize for excellence, and Ibero-America Week thus became part of the "European Capital of Culture 2010" programme. Each year we organised our programmes in close cooperation with the Department of Spanish and Ibero-American Studies of the Faculty of Humanities, University of Pécs; the Department of Spanish of Pázmány Péter Catholic University (PPKE); the Hungarian–Spanish bilingual section of Kodály Zoltán Secondary School; the Latin American, Spanish and Portuguese embassies accredited in Budapest; the Ministry of Education; the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; and civil society organisations in Pécs and nationwide (such as the Pécs Hungarian–Spanish Society).
In previous years, the patrons-in-chief of Ibero-America Week were always ministers of foreign affairs: János Martonyi, László Kovács, Ferenc Somogyi, Kinga Göncz, János Martonyi and Péter Szijjártó. In keeping with the tradition of previous years, we invited as patrons the ambassadors of Spain and Portugal, the rotating president of GRULA (the Group of Latin American Ambassadors), the President of the Baranya County Assembly, the Mayor of the City of Pécs (a city with county rights) and the Rector of the University of Pécs.

During the 19th Ibero-America Week, we are organising the 4th International Summer University (as the successor to the International Student Forum, which had previously been held five times). In keeping with our traditions, this year's event will once again bring together university students of Spanish and Portuguese studies from our immediate and wider international region, coming to us from the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Slovenia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria and from Hungarian universities. The 7th National and International Meeting of Doctoral Students in American Studies (7–11 May 2018) will also take place, giving young researchers the opportunity to present their findings at an international academic conference.
