Since the 1980s, school inclusion has occupied an increasingly important place in international educational discourse. At the same time, the approach has also emerged at the level of society (social inclusion) and is now one of the key concepts of social policy around the world. In the United States from the early 2000s, and in European discourse from the mid-2010s, diversity and inclusion have also come to the fore in relation to higher education. In parallel with research and development in public education, it has become clear in the higher education context too that quality education and raising the level of academic excellence are closely linked to the issue of inclusive excellence. In step with international trends, research and development activities reflecting this approach have also begun at the University of Pécs. The mission of the Inclusive Excellence Research Group is to extend this presence to research, development, training and practice, and to sustain it on an ongoing basis within a single organisational unit. The new research group will thus be a transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary workshop of the University of Pécs, and specifically of its Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Alongside exploratory basic and applied research, it will apply its findings in the strategic and tactical areas of development and support practical implementation through training services and other forms of organisational services. The research group also aims to connect with Hungarian and international research centres working in the field of inclusive excellence.
