The purpose of the research center

Within the broad, interdisciplinary field of Irish Studies, the Irish Studies Research Group focuses on a number of research areas related to literature and culture:

  • Anglo-Irish prose, especially the works of Jonathan Swift, Laurence Sterne and Maria Edgeworth;
  • Irish drama (from the Irish Literary Revival at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries to contemporary Irish drama, e.g. J. M. Synge, Brian Friel, Tom Murphy, Frank McGuinness, Conor McPherson); the work of Irish women playwrights;
  • Irish prose fiction and the short story;
  • Irish–Hungarian and Irish–Central European intercultural studies;
    Contemporary Irish society (the history of the island of Ireland, and the place of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland in Europe);
  • The role of translation and adaptation in Irish literature;
  • The reception of Irish literature in Hungary.

Members of the research group disseminate their findings through conferences, publications and workshops to audiences interested in literary and cultural studies in general and in Irish Studies in particular.

The research centre's members are university lecturers, researchers and PhD students from various fields of study at the University of Pécs.

Supporting talented students interested in Irish Studies as an interdisciplinary research field also plays an important role in the centre's work.
