The research group brings together and organises research in classical philology at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Pécs (PTE BTK), as well as research related to Ancient Greek, Latin and European Latinity. It also undertakes teaching in these subjects within the programmes of various departments. As an organisational framework, the research group supports effective research by developing the necessary infrastructure, coordinating and organising research, seeking out funding opportunities, and designing and running projects.
The research group seeks opportunities for cooperation with other institutions and universities, and enables their researchers to join as external associates (through joint grant applications, publications and conferences).
A particularly important task is preserving the legacy of Károly Kerényi. This includes keeping Kerényi's specialist library intact, looking after it and researching it, as well as preserving and researching his family correspondence. In keeping with the basic expectations of modern research and following the principle of interdisciplinarity, the research group is also open to scholars of patristics, archaeology, art history, philosophy and aesthetics, among others.
The research group also aims to maintain contact with other centres of classical studies in Hungary and with the University of Pécs's partner universities in the region.
The "Hyperion Project" plays a prominent role in the group's activities and may develop into one of the most important joint undertakings of Hungarian classical studies, uniting its various research centres. The project is led as main organiser by the Collection of Classical Antiquities of the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest. One of its aims is to create a digital encyclopedia of classical studies based on artefacts held by Hungarian museums with collections of ancient cultures. Through entries attached to these objects, in principle unlimited in number and direction and edited according to unified scholarly standards, the encyclopedia will give a comprehensive picture of the cultures of classical antiquity. Its other aim is to create a portal for ancient art and classical studies that brings together related databases within a single framework. Writing entries for the online encyclopedia also offers great educational opportunities: as experience in recent years has shown, university students can be involved at various levels through a range of seminars and specialist courses, as well as through research workshops and joint publications.
