Founded in 1994, the Pécs Aerial Archaeology Archive received its operating licence in 2004 as a public museum collection with a national collecting scope, belonging to the University of Pécs.
The collection holds images covering a large part of the country, most of them of areas along the Danube and of the Kiskunság region. Work to extract the information contained in the aerial photographs and to process the collection fully is ongoing, but given the sheer volume of data, much remains to be done. The earlier inventory was compiled by Andrea Lóki, and the first major photogrammetric and GIS work was carried out by Gábor Bertók.
The holdings of the Pécs Aerial Archaeology Archive are currently managed by Máté Szabó, who is also developing an up-to-date GIS system. Archaeology students occasionally take part in the collection work as well. The primary aim of the Archive is to evaluate the images collected so far and to identify and define sites precisely, in order to support future archaeological research. Aerial archaeology is one of the so-called non-destructive archaeological methods, which make it possible to gather information about sites over large areas. Its greatest advantage is that it presents archaeological traces to the viewer in their wider context.
In the future, the method may play an important role in assessing and monitoring the condition of sites, designating areas for protection, and supporting systematic research. Field identification of the photographed areas and the creation of an (aerial) archaeological topography will be essential in the future. Since 2018, following a decision of the institute meeting of the Institute of History (PTE BTK), the Pécs Aerial Archaeology Archive has been a non-independent unit of the Department of Archaeology supporting teaching and research.
It has accordingly been included in the Institute of History's Internal Organisational and Operational Regulations, whose final ratification, in line with the Faculty's Organisational and Operational Regulations, will be completed at the next institute meeting of the Institute of History.
The first working meeting of the unit, which is in need of radical development (collection review and preservation), took place on 12 April 2018. At this meeting, the Department of Archaeology placed its staff and infrastructure at the unit's disposal in order to support and develop the Aerial Archaeology Archive.
The new organisational structure in which the Aerial Archaeology Archive has operated since 2018 can fully guarantee that the University of Pécs complies with the legal regulations essential for the proper operation of a museum collection with a national collecting scope.
