The purpose of the research center
The research group aims, even in the short term, to coordinate the new research initiatives its members have launched in recent years, and to bring together research in English and Hungarian literary history carried out at the University of Pécs and at other institutions in Hungary. It also seeks to support the development of joint interdisciplinary research projects, the submission of joint research grant applications, and the publication of work in Hungary and abroad.
The group's longer-term plans include cooperation with other research centres. Many of its members organise or give talks at Csütörtökeste ("Thursday Evening"), a lecture series with a decade-long tradition. Speakers from every major university and research centre in the country have appeared there, and many of them have shown interest in the research group as well. There is already a fruitful relationship with the Inscriptiones Alborum Amicorum database, run at the University of Szeged under the direction of Miklós Latzkovits. Preparation has informally begun for a group of students who would join in further developing this vast database.
The group's teaching staff are experienced supervisors. Under their guidance, numerous papers for the Faculty and National Conferences of Scientific Students' Associations (KTDK and OTDK) have been produced in recent years, and several of these have developed into PhD dissertations, either in progress or already defended. One of the group's aims is to provide a framework for these activities as well.
The members of the research group have a wide-ranging publication record. Besides authoring numerous monographs and articles, several of them took part in launching and building up VERSO, a literary history journal founded in 2018 that later expanded into a publishing house. Its book publishing activity is also substantial. The head of the research centre is a member of the editorial board of FOCUS: Papers in English and American Studies, has edited several of its issues, and, together with Gabriella Hartvig, played an active role in creating the journal's online edition.
