The purpose of the research center

The Research Centre for Romani Studies was established in early 2012 at the Department of Romani Studies and Sociology of Education, Institute of Education, Faculty of Humanities, University of Pécs (PTE BTK). Its aim is to bring together research on the Roma/Gypsy population, a field that is being pursued ever more widely both in Hungary and internationally.

Keeping in mind scholarly and professional standards, and aligning them with current social challenges, topical issues and policy questions, we have set up three workshops (the Language Workshop, the Sociology of Education Workshop and the Social Studies Workshop). Together they cover the three broad disciplinary areas of scholarly discourse on the Roma/Gypsy population. The workshops are organised in concentric circles. The founding community consists of the experts of the Pécs Romani Studies team and the students of the Henrik Wlislocki College for Advanced Studies. This circle is gradually widening to include more researchers and professionals: other higher education institutions and research institutes, higher education institutions beyond Hungary's borders, scientific research institutes and individuals, and Hungarian and international civil society organisations and NGOs are joining the work.

Our goal is to start a dialogue and to create and maintain connections between research teams, experts and Roma colleges for advanced studies in Hungary and abroad. An important forum for this is Romológia, a registered, multilingual scholarly journal published quarterly since June 2013. The journal was founded and is maintained jointly with the Henrik Wlislocki College for Advanced Studies, which operates alongside the Department and the Research Centre and brings together students from various faculties of the University of Pécs.

In this way, the Research Centre's coordinating and unifying role in organising research also works in another dimension. It integrates professionals working at different levels of academia and encourages them to work together, including in training the next generation, from undergraduate students through PhD students and young researchers to senior researchers.

The work of the workshops to date is marked by the Romani Studies Conferences held annually since 2013, by the thematic volumes published in the Department's decades-old Gypsy Studies book series, and by funded research projects that involve members of both the Research Centre and the College for Advanced Studies.

The research center's talent development activities

The Research Centre for Romani Studies, which is unique within the University of Pécs, is closely linked to the Sociology of Education programme of the University's "Education and Society" Doctoral School of Education. As a result, we involve several talented young PhD students in every one of our projects, helping these young researchers deepen their disciplinary and methodological knowledge and develop their attitude as researchers. Since 2002, our Department has also hosted the Henrik Wlislocki College for Advanced Studies at the University of Pécs. The College aims to support the professional and academic advancement of disadvantaged, primarily Roma, students, thereby helping to build and strengthen a future Roma intelligentsia. We also actively involve the College's students in our research projects, giving them the opportunity to gain professional and academic knowledge and experience through fieldwork and the processing of research results.

Our students have represented the College at numerous conferences and professional events. In the 2016/2017 academic year, these were as follows:
