The purpose of the research center

One of the first goals of the research centre, established on the model of similar institutions abroad, was to introduce the modern theory and practice of evaluation research in Hungary. In many helping and development fields in Hungary, there is no strong tradition of either independent evaluation research or development-oriented, community-based participatory research. Evaluation is often still understood as controlling, even though evidence-based and evidence-informed practice is increasingly expected as resources shrink. Another characteristic is methodological poverty. There are hardly any examples of the type of evaluation common internationally: complex, mixed-methods evaluation that incorporates process evaluation and carefully distinguishes mere outputs from effectiveness. SZINEK's mission is to remedy these shortcomings.

In 2007, thanks to a Leonardo grant, the current head of SZINEK was able to join the work of the Social and Health Evaluation Unit (SHEU) in the United Kingdom. SHEU was founded by Prof. Dr. Roger Ellis, who, together with Prof. Dr. Elaine Hogard, drew on thirty years of research experience to develop Trident, a versatile framework for evaluation research. The model has been widely used to evaluate social, health and educational innovations.

From the outset, SZINEK's activities have been closely intertwined with the work of the Department's Addiction Studies Workshop, founded and led by Prof. Dr. Gábor Kelemen. SZINEK has conducted its research mainly on addiction-related topics.

The first major milestone in evaluation research came in 2013, when SHEU became an international organisation and our research centre joined it. Over the past few years, we have organised several joint workshops, and publication partnerships have developed with our British partner.

In 2014, the Ministry of Human Capacities commissioned the 4 Dimension Social Science Association to carry out a study, in which SZINEK staff also took part. Using a development-oriented, participatory approach, we examined the work of residential addiction rehabilitation institutions, and later, during 2016, the Hungarian addiction care system. In 2017, our British partner invited us to write a book chapter on quality assurance issues in Hungarian higher education (in press). Also in 2017, we began developing a set of professional evaluation criteria for addiction-related grant applications.

Another significant project of ours is the application of Ipseus, a software framework linked to Identity Structure Analysis, in the field of evaluation research. With the support of the 4 Dimension Social Science Association, we organised several workshops on this topic, open to interested teaching staff and researchers of the Faculty.

In addition, the expertise and evaluation research experience SZINEK staff have gained in recent years support the Faculty's quality development work. In recent years, we have also taught several courses on the subject for our students.

Since 2018, we have regularly organised international conferences (e.g. https://pea.lib.pte.hu/handle/pea/24860, as well as in papers published in the journal Szociális Szemle).

Since 2022, we have been involved in research on teacher identity together with our British and Canadian partners (https://pea.lib.pte.hu/handle/pea/34369).
