On Feedback for Deeper Learning: From Normative Theory to Practical Usage in Classroom Settings

című angol nyelvű előadására

Research on teachers and teaching has shown that formative assessment can improve student learning more than most instructional practices (Hattie 2012). Empirical evidence demonstrates that well-implemented formative assessment practices that focus on use of feedback shift students’ and presumably teachers’ learning trajectories (Hattie & Timperley, 2007; Hattie & Clarke, 2019). The use of feedback has been a salient feature of the best practices literature in formative assessment for decades (Sadler, 1989; Wiliam, 2007; Wiliam & Thompson, 2008).

We know that formative feedback as a high-leverage classroom assessment practice has many characteristics, facets, and processes (Duckor & Holmberg, 2022). Yet a clear, unswerving look at the individual development and comparative differences between teachers’ knowledge and use of feedback practices has been undertheorized. The idea of developmental trajectories of formative feedback practice lurks beneath many discussions of effective classroom strategies and high-leverage teaching practices (TeachingWorks, 2018), but too frequently the development of these strategies and practices is left unpacked by scholars. Building from recent research in assessment for learning literatures (Duckor & Holmberg, 2017; Duckor & Holmberg, 2023) the talk will focus on the question: Which models, frameworks, strategies, and practices are associated with effective design, implementation, and evaluation of formative feedback centered work in primary and secondary school settings
