How to Do Things with Things? A Corpus-Stylistics Analysis of Objects in Modernist Fiction.

My research project sets out to investigate the narrative effects of objects in modernist fiction. I propose a literary-linguistic discourse perspective on the textual representation of objects and readers’ comprehension processes. Focussing on linguistic patterns in noun phrases such as syntactic argument structure, lexico-semantic aspects and ergative/transitive patterns, I hope to find quantitative and qualitative evidence that can help examine and explain the interaction texts manifest (Martin and Rose 1). With a detection of textual patterns I also hope to be able to explain further the emergence of what Katja Mellmann has termed “psycho-poetic effects” of reading, such as ontological concepts of narrative character, narrative space and voice and the question of inferencing coherence via the objects represented. I will regard objects in that respect as textual cues that evoke a special aesthetic experience further investigating the experimental nature of modernist language.
