Dear Bachelor's Students,

The spring semester’s module selection process is expected to begin soon – most likely on April 10. During this period, students enrolled in BA programmes will have the opportunity to choose either a specialisation or the minor module of another programme to complement their major.
The available options vary by programme: in some cases, legislation does not permit any choice at all (e.g. Political Science, Psychology, Archaeology); in other programmes, only internal specialisations are available (these are typically within the field of social sciences); and there are also programmes where students may choose either a specialisation or a minor (these usually belong to the field of humanities).

You can find the available options in the table below (green – available, grey – not available):

Information about the specialisations available within your major will be provided by the relevant department. However, details about the minors are often more difficult to find. This page is intended to help you navigate those options.

Archaeology

We welcome students interested in the material and spiritual culture of ancient times and  civilisations of the past to our Archaeology minor. According to the current legislation in Hungary, archaeology is primarily concerned with the study of archaeological sites and material remains from the prehistoric period to 1711 AD, using the methods of history, art history, natural sciences and social sciences in order to explore the past in as much detail as possible.

Theoretical and practical courses in the archaeology minor program include introductory lectures on archaeology, keynote lectures, seminars on expertise in the archeological material of the different periods from prehistory to the early modern period, as well as courses on history, religious history, art history and museology. Students can participate in field trips, excavations, survesy, visits to archaeological sites, historic monuments and museum exhibitions of outstanding importance, providing insights into the methods of archaeological fieldwork.

The Archaeology minor program is particularly useful for students of humanities or social sciences who wish to gain a better understanding of the mysteries of prehistoric, ancient and medieval cultures, in addition to the study of written historical sources, through the study of material remains, archaeological finds, elements of our cultural built heritage and the diverse methods of archaeology.

Liberal Arts

All the disciplines in the Liberal Arts program are now open for interested students of PTE in the form of minor courses. You can choose from Art History, Classical Studies, Film Studies and Philosophy.

In the Western cultural tradition liberal arts education has always been the ultimate mark of an educated person, and still today it provides a comprehensive education in the humanities with the foundation knowledge to enter a number of careers in cultural life, education, and government, or to go straight into graduate study in any subject of humanities.

Art History emphasizes art-historical theories and analytic methods with a strong focus on the visual arts of Europe and North America. It develops students’ critical skills and approaches to study and interpret works of art. These skills can be applied in many professions: education, public museums, commercial galleries, auction houses, interior design, fashion marketing, advertising, art journalism etc.

Classical Studies programme offers an introduction to the era of classical antiquity, which is considered the essential education for a critically thinking individual knowledgeable in many fields and highly articulate. It provides a sound foundation for studies in European literatures and Western cultural history in general – literary genres, mythology, Greek and Roman religion, arts, philosophy and history of science.

Film and Visual Studies minor is to train professionals who are able to critically analyse and aesthetically evaluate films by giving the students substantial training in film analysis, history, and theory.

Philosophy minor provides a thorough, broad and comprehensive historical and systematic education in philosophy. The programme will equip you with the ability to think logically, to evaluate arguments critically, and to challenge your own ideas and those of other people. You will learn about the central philosophical principles, concepts, problems, texts and figures of the Western tradition.

The subjects provide students with the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the principles, methods, and practical applications of social work. In these classes, students will learn essential values and skills, including solidarity, tolerance, respect for autonomy, protection of human rights, responsibility, empathy, creativity, a helping attitude, and critical reflective thinking.
This training is particularly beneficial for those studying humanities or social sciences who wish to gain insights into the social context of human development, social processes, emerging social problems, and the various pathways and challenges associated with effective solutions.
